June 13, 2006

Rounder Records recently asked if I could work on an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) video for THE DAMNWELLS' new album Air Stereo. I guess I was the best person considering I have 131 hrs of footage of the band. The video is online for your viewing pleasure.

LIve Performances
April 4, 2006

We recently launched the Official Site for the upcoming film GOLDEN DAYS. At first, I wasn't updating the site much. But as I sat here logging in footage one night, I realized the BLOG would be a perfect place to showcase some of the performances we've been shooting. There's so much footage and so many great performances that will never make it into the film.

So if you're bored work, can't sleep at night, or just like music, stop by the site and see performances by The Damnwells, Augustana, The Fray, and Cary Brothers. Keep checking in, we'll be posting more.

Golden Days Website Up and Running
February 22, 2006

We haven't had much news around here lately. We've been hard at work on the new film. And yes, at the moment we are calling it Golden Days. I've been reading this book by Chris Gore called Film Festival Survival Guide. In the book he states that you should start a website for your film as soon as possible. We've been filming for nearly a year so we figured we should get the site up and running. It's essentially a work in progress that is mainly a Blog where we can post updates about the film and also give fans a look at some of the footage that probably won't make it into the film.

Sneak Peek at the New Flick
October 25, 2005

So we've been keeping quiet about it, but here'e the scoop. For the last 8 months, we've been working on a documentay on the Brooklyn based rock band The Damnwells. We're still filming, but we're hoping to have a rough cut of the film done by early January. Not much more to say at this point, but we do a have a short teaser for you to take a look at.

FAILURE on DVD!!!
October 25, 2005

FAILURE is finally on DVD. Thanks to CustomFlix, we now have a way of distributing the film professionally. The DVD includes not only the new IFC version of the film, but also the original Film Festival version. Along with that you get an unedited version of Ryan and Harry's Ack Ack Sequence, the original opening to the film, an audio commentary with Ryan Burger, Harry Applegate, and Director Chris Suchorsky, and one of the funniest intros to an audio commentary you may ever see.

You can get your copy of the DVD at www.failure-movie.com

FAILURE on IFC!!!
July 26, 2005

That's right people, IFC wants FAILURE. I got the word a few months ago that they were interested and we started to get everything together. We are in the final stages of completion. Just waiting for some copyright info to come in and the television rights belong to IFC for the next 3 years. So if you missed it on the festival circuit, don't have your copy of the DVD yet, or can't borrow a copy from me (and never give it back), you'll be able to see it on IFC. And if you don't have IFC, call your cable provider. It's worth it.

So a special thanks to Rod Murphy (Director of Greater Southbridge) for putting me in contact with Cynthia Kane at the Sundance Channel. And a special thanks to Cynthia Kane for putting me in touch with Kelly DeVine at IFC. You guys rock!

FAILURE Launches a New Website
July 26, 2005

So the last time I update the FAILURE site was before we went to the 2004 Phoenix Film Festival. So that was April 2004. Sorry, I'm tired. But considering IFC decided they wanted the film, I figured I could take a little time out to work on a new site. It's still being worked on as we speak, but it's getting there.

THE PARK plays at the TRIBECA UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL and Chris crashes his car!
April 29, 2005

We were happy to hear that THE PARK had been accepted to the 2005 TRIBECA UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL. It had been a year since we had anything play in the festival circuit. We took a little break after FAILURE ended it's run in APRIL 2004. In March of this year I started work on a feature length documentary. The film involved hours upon hours of filming in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and other various cities in the US (We are currently filming/more info to come soon). But I made the mistake of working a regular 9-5 Mon-Fri and filming from 6-12 Mon and Wed. By Thursday (Tribeca night) I was tired. Needless to say I fell asleep on the way home. Luckily I was not injured. Which is a lot to say considering I flew sideways into a dirt median at 70mph with the top down on the car. I don't remember if I had my seat belt on.

The car is still being worked on. It's only come to about 14k in damages so far.

Anyway, thanks to the TRIBECA UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL for having us. I should've stayed for the after party.

Indie Comedy Zine MODEST PROPOSAL Talks FAILURE
February 15, 2005

Last April FAILURE played at the 2004 Phoenix Film Festival. Ryan McKee, stand up comic and writer for Modest Proposal, saw FAILURE and asked if he could do a story. And of course, we said "yes." Read below.

Chris Suchorsky's medium length documentary, Failure, is simple; boy meets movies; boy makes movies; boy fails at making movies; boy makes a movie about him failing to make a movie.

The documentary Lost In La Manchu did the same thing, chronicling Terry Gilliam's failure to make a film based on Don Quixote. However, where La Manchu is one depressing disaster after the next, Suchorsky makes his film more like a hilarious diary entry. He recounts growing up addicted to TV and movies, to being a dumb-ass in college, and having his classes chosen for him since he was on a wrestling scholarship. Finally, his senior year, he actually opened the schools catalogue and found they had a small film program.

A bright light didn't appear over Chris at that point and suddenly cause him to start churning out films. He learned the basics, he went on to graduate and become an advertising agent (that's wrong, I'm not an agent).

Unhappy, he decided to rally his friends together to shoot a full-length film in six days. It didn't work, but the documentary about his failure did. Here's an interview wih Chris.

You've been making the rounds to the festivals. Have the film geeks annoyed you?
The weird film types haven't bothered me. I surround myself with normal people, like cops and stuff.

Being from Jersey, is Kevin Smith an influence?
He is the "King of New Jersey." I never knew independent film existed until I saw Clerks. Ever since I was eight years old, I wanted to make movies. But I thought you had to be born in Hollywood or something to do that. Here's this black and white film, that's in New Jersey, and they're saying "fuck" every other word. It was great.

When you realized your film was a bust, how did you decide to make it into Failure?
First, I thought I would spoof the movie I was trying to do. Where my girlfriend would play the main character, who realizes the film is falling apart. She and I would have this dialogue about how it all fell apart. I wrote another script for it and shot all the parts, only it wasn't funny. But it helped me learn what's funny and how to tell the story.

Why aren't there many comedies at most festivals?
First thing I learned about comedy is it's the hardest thing to write. So a lot of films you see at these festivals tend to be dramas, they're much easier to write.

What's next?
I'm going to do a personal documentary again that will be funny. It won't be as quirky as Super Size Me or anything. There seems to be this boom in documentaries. I do feel a push to get my next one done before I miss out. It's like back when Clerks and El Mariachi first came out, there was this independent film boom and everybody was doing an indie film. I still think there's a small niche for comedy documentaries.

How does Chris Suchorsky keep it real?
I'm just a guy in New Jersey. I get up and go to work everyday at my regular job. Then when I get home, instead of sitting around, I work on scripts or editing. Nowbody's throwing money at me.

The Damnwells Video "Kiss Catastrophe" Is Available Online
January 7, 2005

Last March we spent a day with the Brooklyn based alt pop band The Damnwells. The idea was to shoot a music video for their second single KISS CATASTROPHE off their new album "Bastards of the Beat." We played a little loose with the script and the end result is what you see here. AND WE LIKE IT!!!

Last Weekend Productions Finishes the Short Film THE PARK
December, 29 2004

Back in 98 when I was at Seton Hall University, I worked on an untitled film about three people on a park bench. I know it sounds exciting, but it's actually not bad. The film was part of an assignment for an advanced film class I wandered into. Anyway, the 16mm camera was broken and destroyed most of my footage and just about everyone elses in the class. For the past couple of years I have wanted to go back and re-shoot that film. Well, we've done it. We shot the film over three days back in October. Some free time opened up over the Holiday Season and I am happy to say that the film is complete. THE PARK is currently in film festival submission.

Film Threat Gives FAILURE 4 Stars
December 20, 2004

Imagine spending your entire life wanting to make movies. Then imagine finally grabbing life by its testicles and taking the plunge. You read every book you can find on the subject. You get the equipment and the actors all lined up, and then you begin. Your dream is coming true.

Imagine something else, however. Imagine spending your entire life wanting to make movies. Then imagine not going to film school and instead taking a job in advertising. You decide to pursue your dream anyway and read every book you can find on the subject of film. You write a full-length feature and then reason that you can shoot it in six days. You rent all your equipment ... and then realize you don’t know how to use it. You have all the actors ready to go, but some of them aren’t professional, some can’t meet their obligations and two of them are your goofball friends who hit their maturity peak back in the sixth grade. Imagine realizing this crazy dream is never going to come true.

Welcome to “Failure,” the hilarious documentary about Chris Suchorsky’s dream and his inability to make it a reality.

Suchorsky is probably like a lot of directors and writers out there, only without the drive and skills. What he is good at, however, is procrastinating and playing kind of loose with the truth to get actors to do what he wants. He’s also very good at laughing at himself and turning his personal defeats into spectacular achievements. Heck, I can guarantee that “Failure” is a far better movie than the one he set out to make (which included creepy twins and guys speaking like aliens). Don’t take that as a slam against Suchorsky, though. His talent lies elsewhere in the film world, and this short documentary is proof of that.

If enough people see this and give him positive feedback, he may set out to do another movie. Here’s to hoping he has one more ”Failure” in him, though. And I mean that in the most sincere and positive way imaginable.

-Doug Brunell
